Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that the long-awaited Thessaloniki metro will finally be operational on November 30, 2024. This announcement was made during a presentation about regional development strategies and a new digital platform.

Mitsotakis acknowledged the project’s troubled history, marked by false starts and controversies. He emphasized that this time, the metro will be fully functional and ready for public use, not just another ceremonial opening. The Prime Minister called for a citywide celebration to mark this significant milestone.

In addition to the metro, Mitsotakis mentioned other infrastructure projects, including the FlyOver, which is expected to be completed by spring 2027. He asserted that his administration has been particularly proactive in developing Thessaloniki’s infrastructure.

The event also featured the introduction of a new digital platform, erga.gov.gr, which is part of the government’s strategy to promote regional development. Minister of State Akis Skertsos presented this platform along with various regional development plans. The overarching goal is to bring Greek incomes, both nationally and regionally, closer to European standards, with a particular focus on matching the income levels of the Attica region.
