The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras and Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis announced that the second construction phase of the Patras-Pyrgos section of the Elefsina-Corinth-Patras-Pyrgos highway will be included in the NSRF (National Strategic Reference Framework, also known as ESPA) Transport 2021-2027 program and is expected to be completed by 2025.

The project involves the construction of the 74.8 km Patras-Pyrgos section, the last step towards the Elefsina-Corinth-Patras-Pyrgos highway completion. For the first 13 km, the new highway section will be built by widening the existing National Road, while the remaining 61.8 km will follow a new alignment.

The new highway features 2 lanes per direction, emergency lanes with corresponding guide lanes, safety lanes in the median, and a median strip with dual-sided barriers. Designated parking areas with accompanying entrance-exit lanes will be created at predetermined locations along the highway.

The overall physical scope of the project includes:

  • The construction of the Patras-Pyrgos Highway, with a length of 74.8 km,
  • 8 interchanges/partial interchanges at the locations: Mintilogliou, Industrial Area, Kato Achaia, Varda, Kyllini, Gastouni, Amaliada, and Pyrgos,
  • Work on the adjacent and cross-network,
  • Other accompanying works, including stormwater drainage, signage, safety barriers, fencing, large and small technical works (bridges, overpasses and underpasses, sewers, walls, etc.), environmental works, etc. The project also includes expenses for expropriations, archaeological work, relocation of utility networks, and consultancy services required for the completion of the second phase of the project.

Upon completion, the 74.8 km Patras–Pyrgos section of the Elefsina-Corinth-Patras-Pyrgos highway will be opened to traffic, significantly enhancing traffic conditions, reducing overall travel time, improving road safety, and generally increasing accessibility for all towns in the broader regions of Ilia and Achaia. Additionally, this highway will facilitate and support the economic development of Western Greece, contribute to tourism growth, and improve socio-economic conditions.
